On the 8th December 2020, the television program “LN24” dedicated a special interview to the founder and director of the Womepreneur Initiative: Sana Afouaiz.
During the interview, the initiative was presented. Founded in 2016, the Womenpreneur aims to promote the participation of women in the economic field.
Here you can find the complete interview in French.
What is the Womenpreneur Initiative?
The Womenpreneur Initiative is a Brussels-based organization focused on the empowerment of women in the entrepreneurial and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.
Womenpreneur activities and initiatives are focused on Belgium and MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region.
As Sana Afouaiz points out during the interview: “Womenpreneur aims to place women at the centre of economy and the job market, to advance women’s place in the entrepreneurial scene, technology and innovation. Only in this way we can guarantee women’s freedom and autonomy in both regions.”
As a matter of fact, since 2016 the Womenpreneur Initiative has reached and supported more than 13.000 women between Belgium and the Mena region through several projects and partnerships.
Why focusing on the Digital field?
As Sana declares during the interview: “The digital field is the future and since the technological domains are not gendered, women can use the power of technology to change history, having a new place for them, compared to the past. For these reasons, new technologies could lead to crucial opportunities for women.”
Unfortunately, according to the 2018 Women in Tech Index, women hold 46.11% of all jobs in Belgium but only 14.09% of jobs in the field of technology.
Moreover, as Sana points out: “The Internet is an essential tool to facilitate women in finding opportunities. Nevertheless, a significant majority of women do not have access to the internet. Speaking about tech rights, women are discriminated against.”
The GenerationW program
During the interview, she also presented the GenerationW program, an initiative that the Womenpreneur Initiative launched in 2020. It was the first accelerator program promoted in Brussels during the Covid-19 pandemic and it aims to support female business in the city.
